About Susan Jubb Solicitors

Susan Jubb Solicitors is a small, tight-knit practice that has been operating since 2012. Rick Midgley, who manages the business side of the practice, came to the role by an unconventional route of 23 years in the prison service.

That background gives Rick a refreshingly no-nonsense perspective on technology. The firm keeps things deliberately simple – focused legal work, a lean team, and no appetite for unnecessary complexity.

Why Osprey?

When FilePro pulled support for their version of the software, Susan Jubb Solicitors needed to find a new system. But for Rick, the move was an opportunity to get it right – finding something that genuinely suited the way the firm works.

Rick consulted closely with Kate Hague, a fellow firm owner navigating the same move, and together they evaluated their options. Both landed on Osprey.

“Kate found Osprey in the market, sent me the link, and between us we said — you know what, I think we ought to give that a try.”

What sealed it was simplicity. After reviewing what was available, Osprey stood out as the system least likely to create unnecessary complexity for a firm that had no appetite for it.

“It just looked like the best option — the least aggravation.”

Getting Started: Refreshingly Painless

The setup itself was straightforward from day one. The Osprey team gathered what they needed – nominal lists, data, system preferences – and got the firm live without fuss.

“It was all very, very easy. We got an email, it’s live – done, job done, sorted. There was nothing difficult about it.”

The firm chose not to migrate historical data from FilePro, a decision Rick made on purely practical grounds.

“We didn’t take up the data transfer from FilePro –  we run both, with one slowly winding down but everything new from July is now managed in Osprey”

Day-to-Day: Simple Does the Job

In smaller firms, there’s rarely the luxury of specialist roles. Rick manages the accounts, the billing, and the financial administration — all of it, alongside everything else that keeps the practice running.

“I had to be the accountant, the time recorder, the biller — all three. In a bigger firm you’d have three different people for that. I’ve got all of it.”

For firms in that position, having a system that brings everything into one place isn’t a nice-to-have — it’s essential. Osprey gives Rick the visibility and control to manage every financial function from a single platform, without the complexity designed for teams three times the size.

One of the unexpected benefits of moving to Osprey has been the shift from a Windows-only, office-bound system to one accessible from anywhere.

“The previous system was Windows-based only — it meant I couldn’t work from home. I can now log on from anywhere in the world now, which is brilliant.”

For a small firm where flexibility matters, being able to post an invoice or check accounts from home – without it being a crisis – is a genuine improvement.

A support team that makes the difference

When asked what had been most valuable about his experience with Osprey so far, Rick’s answer wasn’t a product feature – it was the support.

“The best thing has been the level of support I’ve been able to tap into. That’s been truly excellent.”

For a firm where one person is navigating a new system without an accounts background, having someone to call makes a significant difference. Rick is clear that the phone-based support has consistently delivered.

“The people who have called me have been incredibly good on the telephone.”

Advice to Other Firms Looking to Switch Software

Asked what he’d say to firms hesitant to make the move, Rick offers clear advice:

“If you’re looking for a simple system — look no further. Take the jump and do it.”

He understands the fear. Moving a case management system carries real risk in a regulated environment, and no one wants to create months of remedial work for themselves.

“That fear – if this goes wrong, we’re stuffed – is real, and it’s always there for people.” But his own experience has reframed it.”I would say it was incredibly painless. The risk isn’t as bad as you think.”

Rick’s final word on the matter is characteristically unvarnished:

“It’s a great system. I really genuinely like it.”he confidence that our accounts are accurate, compliant, and under control.”
